Sunday Night Synthesis Series 1

Episode 01 - Producing Formants with the Moog Werkstatt and Arduino Uno

This video is a taste of what is to come in the series, Sunday Night Synthesis with Lawrence W. Moore. In this video, Moore uses a Moog Werkstatt as a stand-alone synthesizer and an Arduino utilizing an ultrasonic range sensor to feed a voltage signal to the Werkstatt's linear VCO input. With added low-pass filtering, a good bit of resonance, and LFO modulation of the filter, it makes for a pretty scary array of formants. All sound being produced is being generated by the Moog Werkstatt analog synthesizer.


Episode 02 - Harmonic Meditation No. 1

This harmonic meditation is taste of what some of the content will be like in the series, Sunday Night Synthesis. This piece was performed using a Moog Werkstatt, a Moog Mother 32, an Electro-Harmonics Memory Boy analog delay, a MoogerFooger Cluster-Flux, and a MoogerFooger 12 Stage Phaser.

Episode 03 - My Modular Synth Setup Part 1

This is the inaugural episode of Sunday Night Synthesis. In this episode, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore introduces his modular synthesis setup and focuses on the Moog Werkstatt and Arturia KeyStep. He shows many of their functions and describes some of the fundamentals of synthesis.

Episode 04 - A Tale of Two Sequencers - Moog Mother 32 & Arturia KeyStep

I came across this moment of inspiration after I had connected my Arturia KeyStep with on-board sequencer/Arpeggiator via MIDI to my Moog Mother 32 and vis CV/Gate to my Moog Werkstatt. I then also connected the Arturia's sync output to the start/stop CV in of the Mother 32. The result was a juxtaposition of the arpeggio on the KeyStep and the sequence on the Mother 32. With some added beauty from my MoogerFooger 12 Stage Phaser and my Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy analog delay, it made for a rather interesting compositional idea. This is just a jam that came out when working with this routing.

Episode 05 - Roaming Through Magical Sands While Drunk

This week's episode is a piece entitled Roaming Across Magical Sands. The core of the piece is an 8 step sequence that was entered into the Moog Mother 32's step sequencer. The same sequence was entered into the Arturia KeyStep's step sequencer. The two units were synchronized via a MIDI cable. In this arrangement, the tempo knob of the Mother 32 becomes a time subdivision knob as the tempo is being set by the KeyStep. Various subdivisions of time allow for the sequence of the Mother 32 to come forth in different lengths. As the KeyStep sends notes of the sequence, the Mother 32 has freedom to play its sequence until a new note comes from the KeyStep. The notes from the KeyStep also force the Mother 32 to play its sequence using these notes as the first note of its sequence, thus transposing the rest of the steps of the sequence chromatically to maintain the same intervals above the new note that were set in the original sequence. This setup makes for interesting juxtapositions and transpositions of the sequence to be created.

Episode 06 - My Modular Synth Setup Part 2 - The Moog Mother 32

As the title indicates, this week's episode focuses on the Moog Mother 32 and the ways that Dr. Moore has been using it. He also shows how he integrates it with the Moog Werkstatt and the Arturia KeyStep controller keyboard.

Episode 07 - Cluster-Flux and Mother 32

This week's episode is a piece that I composed on the spot using primarily the Moog Mother 32 and Moog MoogerFooger Cluster-flux. The Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy Deluxe analog delay also plays a role. The Moog MoogerFooger 12 Stage Phaser is the end of the signal change, but was used with steady parameters to create a stereo panning effect. The Mother 32's LFO triangle wave was patched into the external signal input on the mother 32, and the Mother 32's keyboard out is routed to the LFO rate. This helps thicken the tone of the Mother 32. It also allows for two different oscillators to be playing the sequence and the filtering and resolution alters them differently.

Episode 08 - Enjoying the Zoom MS-70CDR

The addition of a Zoom MS-070CDR has taken Lawrence W. Moore's modular synth setup to a whole new level. Moore has organized his units into a flexible, but logically flowing system. This piece of music that was compose don the spot is a good example of the new power within the system, and the abilities of the new equipment to allow for a more ambient-oriented path of composition.

Episode 09 - Guitar Pedals as Synth Modules

Some guitar pedals can be excellent synth modules. In this episode, we take a more in-depth look at the guitar pedals that make up this modular synth setup. We will look at some ways in which a MoogerFooger Cluster-Flux and 12 Stage Phaser can be implemented and patched within a modular system. We also look at how the Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy Deluxe analog delay and the Electro-Harmonix 8 Step Program step sequencer can also be utilized well in a modular synth setup. The Zoom MS-70CDR is icing on the cake.

Episode 10 - Moog Meditation

This meditation piece is based on a drone that is performed by the Moog Mother 32 and Moog Werkstatt. The Mother 32 also mixes together its drone with its noise generator. When on drone, both the Mother 32 and Werkstatt use pulse waves with a slow modulation on their pulse widths. This same LFO modulation lightly affects the cut-off frequency on the low pass filters on both synthesizers. In performance, the cut off frequency and resonance are adjusted at will, allowing for the FFO to take over control over them now and then. Both synthesizers run through a Moog MoogerFooger Cluster-Flux and a Moog MoogerFooger 12 Stage Phaser in sequence. The flange effect on the Cluster-Flux is used frequently at a delay that creates a harmonic resonance. The LFO on the 12 stage Phaser also makes an appearance.

Episode 11 - What's Coming Up in Learning Synthesis with Pure Data

This episode of Sunday Night Synthesis is an announcement of the upcoming second series of Learning Synthesis with Pure Data, which will employ a virtual modular system called LWM Rack for the purpose f building interactive, modular synthesis and sampling systems.

Episode 12 - The Electro-Harmonix 8 Step Program

In this week's episode, we take a look at the Electro-Harmonix 8 Step Program analog step sequencer. Dr. Moore demonstrates a number of different patch possibilities and methods of controlling parameters. It's a great little device for creating patterns for pitches as well as filter cut-off frequencies. As usual, there's a little jam toward the end.
