Sunday Night Synthesis Series 2

Episode 01 - Scary Noises with a Koma Kommander and Korg SQ-1

In this episode, we begin Series 02 with two new pieces of equipment, the 8/16 step sequencer, Korg KQ-1 and the CV/Gate controller, the Koma Kommander. Integrated with the rest of the modular system, these products make for a very open-ended sound production experience as they allow for additional control over various parameters on the Moog Werkstatt and the Moog Mother 32.

Episode 02 - Koma Kommander & Moog Werkstatt Theremin

In last week's Sunday Night Synthesis, we saw a demonstration of using the Koma Kommander and the Korg SQ-1 as controllers in the making an impromptu piece. In this week's episode, we see how the Koma Kommander works and how it can turn a Moog Werkstatt, as well as other synthesizers into a Theremin using its CV & gate outputs which send the signals from the ultra violet range sensors and proximity sensors. The Moog Werkstatt a perfect little good sounding synth to be used as a Theremin with the Koma Kommander.

Episode 03 - Approaches to Ambient Electronic Music Using Synth Modules

In this episode, we take a look at some techniques for creating some ambient electronic music. Dr. Moore uses as an example two recent pieces that he has composed for his Wayfarer music releases. These techniques involve using a noise generator and low pass filter to create wave sounds and various techniques for creating expressive melodies without a controller keyboard.

Episode 04 - Expanding Our Scope and Having Fun with Reason

In this episode, Lawrence W. Moore expands the scope of Sunday Night Synthesis, the series and announces plans to start a series on electronic music production featuring Reason. Dr. Moore also shows the viewer some interesting things he was able to do in Reason using the SubTractor Synthesizer and the Matrix Step Sequencer. These concepts could also be applied to analog modular synthesizer components and for use in other virtual synthesizer applications in software. This technique of using a pattern player to send CV pitch and gate messages as well as additional CV patterns can help make repetitive lines more dynamic. As a result, one combines repetition with gradual change, which helps to make more entrancing musical ideas. A little bit of filter automation provides icing on the cake.

Episode 05 - Therapy Through Synthesis

In this week's episode of Sunday Night Synthesis, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore begins with the announcement of the new series launch, Learning Electronic Music Production with Reason. The rest of the episode is a look at the composition of a new piece, Therapy Through Synthesis. Dr. Moore begins this performance with an overview of his modular synthesis setup and how the synth modules are integrated with one another. He then demonstrates how the different musical parts in the piece are executed. Then, the performance of the piece begins. the piece uses analog synthesis techniques and approaches to create a very meditative experience. While this is not an official meditation, it is very good for relaxation.

Episode 06 - Wavemaker Pure Data Patch

In this episode of Sunday Night Synthesis, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore features a new Pure Data patch that has been in the works. This patch is called Wavemaker and it generates two noise streams that are filtered and oscillated in such a way to produce an ocean wave effect. The two noise streams have separate filters and oscillators so that one can create a more complex ocean wave sound that has a stereo spectrum which generates a more realistic sound of ocean waves. This PD patch can be used to create hypnotic wave sounds that can either be designed to be realistic or designed to be numerically controlled to help educe states of relaxation, hypnosis, or meditation. The patch is modular and can be incorporated into a modular synthesizer system in Pure Data. This PD patch is being developed to eventually be used in tandem with MobMuPlat such that this ocean wave generator can be used on mobile devices. Episode 07 - Integrating Softube Modular with Reason

In this week's episode of Sunday Night Synthesis, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore demonstrates a few techniques for using Softube's Modular virtual Eurorack VST Instrument and Effect suite with Propellerhead Reason. With the release of Reason 9.5, VST Instruments can now be used in the Reason rack, and Modular by Softube is an excellent candidate for integration with Reason devices.

Episode 08 - A Leaner and Meaner Studio

In this week's episode of Sunday Night Synthesis, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore shows the viewers what he did in making his electronic music production studio leaner and meaner. Since the studio is focused on electronic music, Moore moved out some of the equipment that was more recording studio oriented to be used for live sound reinforcement gear, and consolidated the electronic music studio around his Alienware laptop. Because the laptop is a 6th generation Core i7 with 16 GB of memory, it performs faster than the 8 year old desktop he had in the studio. The laptop also has a 500 GB SSD system drive and a 1 TB data drive so it has enough space to operate fast and store all the audio and video projects that Moore is currently working on. Using the laptop as the main computer means that he can take his projects with him and not have to synchronize the laptop with the desktop.

Moore moved out his mixer to be used for live sound and put two nice pieces of analog gear in its place. The Dave Smith Instruments Evolver keyboard and Prophet 08 desktop model are great studio synthesizers. Propellerhead Reason and Cakewalk Sonar are his primary DAWs and of course, Pure Data is his main developmental software.

Episode 09 - More Pure Data? More Reason? More Modular Synthesis? Your Feedback

In this episode, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore just finished filming another episode of Learning Electronic Music Production with Reason and decided to check in with his audience on this Sunday Night to share a little music from that and to ask for some viewer responses. Dr. Moore is interested in knowing what his audience is finding most useful, so that he can prioritize his tutorials. Viewers are encouraged to provide feedback on what videos are benefiting them the most. Episode 10 - Having Fun with Harmonics & Formants - Here are the Pure Data patches used in the video.

In this week's episode, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore makes a few announcements about the new sleek and more Eurorack like design of LWM Rack and talks about some of the topics raised by the viewers. The feature in this episode is the creation of a Pure Data patch that generates harmonics and harmonic content that has features of formants. He does this using the rpole~ object in PD and shows some tips on using the object. He then also shows some different timbres that can be made and transformed in various ways to generate some cool effects.

Episode 11 - Understanding Granular Synthesis with Pure Data - Here are the Pure Data patches used in the video.

In this week's episode, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore teaches you how to use granular synthesis in Pure Data. Even if you don't use PD, this tutorial will give you some understanding of how granular synthesis is achieved. The episode beings with the concept of loading a recorded audio file into a table so that playback rate can be controlled. Then, Moore explains how granular synthesis cuts an audio stream up into what are called grains and how the playback speed of these sliced up grains can be controlled. Next, Moore shows how one can using a Hanning window to form an amplitude envelope over the grains so that they do not generate artifacts, or snaps in the audio playback. Finally, the concepts can be expanded by using a second instance of the audio signal going through an out of phase stream of Hanning windows so that the two signals have grins whose windows dovetail to make the granulation smooth.

Episode 12 - Wavetables and Phasing at the Audio Rate in Pure Data - Here are the Pure Data patches used in the video.

This episode shows one how to execute phase shifting in Pure Data audio rate, which allows phasing to sound smoother, eliminating the snapping sound of artifacts. This method is achieved using Wavetable synthesis, which is also an interesting topic in and of itself. Phasing can create interesting effects that can be triggered by MIDI controllers as well as oscillators, like an LFO. Being able to create changes in phase is an important tool in synthesis.
